Melodies of the Danube is one of AmaWaterways’ most popular itineraries, and it’s easy to see why. Over 7 nights, you’ll sail from Budapest to Vilshofen through Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany, with a complimentary excursion built into nearly every port. Here’s what to expect, day by day.
Budapest: Queen of the Danube
You’ll spend two days in Budapest, one for embarkation and one for exploring. Guests typically choose between the “Queen of the Danube” city walking tour and a more active hike up to Castle Hill for views over the Pest side of the river. Budapest is one of the most photogenic capital cities in Europe, especially at night when the Parliament building and the chain bridges light up along the water, so plan to be on deck for the evening sail-away if your itinerary includes one.
Bratislava: A Capital Most Travelers Have Never Seen
This cruise includes an afternoon stop in Slovakia’s capital which is a highlight for a lot of first-time river cruisers simply because it’s so different than anywhere else. You can choose between the “Coronation City” walking tour through the old town, a “Tastes of Slovakia” food and drink excursion, or a take a hike up to Bratislava Castle for the magnificent view. The city is small enough to cover the main sights in a few hours.
Vienna: City Touring or Bike Tour
Vienna is important enough that it gets a full day to explore. If you’re thinking of doing a bike tour for one of your excursions, Vienna is a good one to do it if you’re comfortable on two wheels. AmaWaterways keeps bikes onboard for guest use, and the Vienna bike tour is consistently one of the first excursions to sell out, so reserve it early if it interests you. Otherwise, a guided city tour covers the historic center, the Ringstrasse, and Vienna’s grand imperial architecture.
The Wachau Valley: Dürnstein, Melk, and Grein
This area is the scenic heart of this cruise. You’ll typically stop in Dürnstein for a wine and apricot tasting (this region is Lower Austria’s wine and apricot country, and the tasting is an authentic local specialty, not just a tourist add-on), with an excursion option to visit Melk Abbey, one of the most visually-striking Baroque buildings in Austria. The ship then sails on to Grein for a private tour of Greinburg Castle, an experience exclusive to AmaWaterways guests! Much of this day is spent on deck watching the terraced vineyards and hillside villages pass by, which is part of the appeal.
Linz: Choose Your Own Adventure Day
Linz is the day with the most excursion variety on the whole cruise. You’ll typically choose from three very different options:
- Salzburg, for a walking tour of the historic center, the setting for The Sound of Music and Mozart’s birthplace.
- Cesky Krumlov, a beautifully preserved medieval town just over the border in the Czech Republic.
- The Salzkammergut (Austrian Lake District), a UNESCO World Heritage region, including the historic town of Gmunden on Lake Traunsee.
There’s no wrong choice here. It really comes down to whether you want a famous name (Salzburg), a quieter medieval town (Cesky Krumlov), or lake and mountain scenery (the Salzkammergut). Great choices like this are why you can do the same river itinerary multiple times and still not see everything.
Passau and Vilshofen: A Fairy-Tale Finish
Passau, where the Inn, Ilz, and Danube rivers meet, gets a guided city tour featuring St. Stephan’s Cathedral (home to the largest cathedral organ in the world), with a guided bike tour available as an alternative for the more active among you. The ship then continues to Vilshofen, a 1,200-year-old Bavarian town, for an onboard or dockside Bavarian-style evening with local food, beer, and folk music before disembarkation the next morning.
Why This Itinerary Is a Popular First River Cruise
Melodies of the Danube visits three European capital cities (Budapest, Bratislava, and Vienna) plus the scenic Wachau Valley and Bavaria, all without repacking a single bag. That combination of well-known cities and quieter countryside is a big part of why we point a lot of first-time river cruisers toward this exact itinerary. It’s also the itinerary behind our hosted “Sail With Us” group cruise aboard the AmaLea, sailing this route in August 2027, if you’d rather travel it alongside other Dream Travel By Design clients and owners Jeff and Kate rather than going it alone.
Frequently Asked Questions About Melodies of the Danube Excursions
What excursions are included on the Melodies of the Danube cruise? AmaWaterways includes at least one excursion option at every port on this itinerary, ranging from walking tours to bike tours to wine and food tastings. Choice-of-excursion days, like Linz, typically offer two to three included options rather than a single fixed tour.
Do I need to pay extra for excursions on an AmaWaterways cruise? The standard excursions listed above are included in your cruise fare.
Which port on this Danube cruise has the most excursion choices? Linz, by a wide margin. It’s the one day where you’re choosing between three genuinely different destinations (Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov, or the Salzkammergut), rather than variations on the same city tour.
Is Melodies of the Danube a good itinerary for first-time river cruisers? Yes. It’s one of AmaWaterways’ most popular Danube itineraries specifically because it balances well-known capital cities with quieter countryside stops, and the pacing (a mix of full days, half days, and scenic cruising) doesn’t wear travelers out the way a packed ocean cruise itinerary can.
