When it comes to the ‘how’ of visiting Alaska, here at Dream Travel by Design, we prefer to combine a cruise with a land tour. We love that we can unpack once on the cruise and see glaciers, wildlife, and towns only accessible by sea. The land tour portion allows you to get deep into the heart of Alaska by train or car and explore the magnificent national parks such as Denali.

That being said, we know our clients have a variety of travel preferences. If your family just isn’t into cruising, but likes to be spontaneous or stop frequently to grab a photo of wildlife or the scenery, we recommend renting a vehicle and going at your pace. If your family prefers to relax and take in the scenery, we recommend traveling on the Alaska Railroad.

For a more luxurious trip, we highly recommend taking a cruise through the Inside Passage, where you’re able to visit the many great towns and glacers along the coast, which are only accessible by boat. You and your family will be able to see whales and otters, enjoy quaint fishing towns, try a thrilling zipline, and maybe see Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.

But for families that want the best of both words, we highly recommend planning a cruise tour that incorporates a cruise with a pre- or post-land package so you can get deeper into the heart of Alaska but also get to see those parts of Alaska you can only see from a ship. You can do the land portion through the cruise line package we arrange for you, or we can book a separate, more customized land package for you as well.
